The President of EMEA, Prof. Rym Ayadi, Professor at the Business School (Former CASS), City, University of London, and Chair of the Banking Stakeholders Group (BSG) of the European Banking Authority (EBA) participated at the 2020 EBA Policy Research Workshop: “New technologies in the banking sector – impacts, risks and opportunities”. The event took place online on 12 and 13 November 2020.
The workshop opened with a welcome address by José Manuel Campa, EBA Chairperson and a keynote speech by Carolyn Rogers, Secretary General of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.
Prof. Ayadi discussed the paper on “Libra or Librae? Basked Based Stablecoins to Mitigate Foreign Exchange Volatility Spillovers” presented by Thomas Leach, of the Session “Digital Payments and Digital Money”, chaired by Samuel Da-Rocha Lopes, EBA. The paper explores stablecoins constructed from a basket of major currencies aimed to stabilise volatility.
At her intervention Prof. Ayadi provided avenues to improve the paper in terms of motivating the choice of the currencies in the basket, assessing the risks of stabilisation methods and exploring the impacts on capital and liquidity regulation.
