The webinar “Europe After the War: What Next for Pan-European, Euro-Mediterranean and EU African Integration?” took place online on Thursday 16 March 2023 and it was co-organised by EMEA in collaboration with CEPS.

The war of aggression against Ukraine has completely changed Europe. Not only has it impacted dramatically on Ukraine and Europe, but the entire world. It has undermined the foundations of international law and multilateralism. It has affected the prospects and the identity itself of the European continent and its global mission. On 01 March 2023, the book  “Europe After the War: What Next for Pan-European, Euro-Mediterranean and EU African Integration?” was published and pre-launched at the prime talk on “Green energy transition in the EU and Africa” organised and sponsored by EMEA at 10th edition of CEPS Ideas Lab. The webinar presented the main conclusions of the book and discussed the future of Europe after the war with the focus on the role of finance and capital markets and the future of partnership and integration towards EU wider neighbourhood.

At the webinar Paolo Garonna underlined “We need a new approach to European integration, bolder in terms of internal reforms, more authoritative and credible vis-a-vis Eastern Europe, the Euro-Mediterranean and Europe Africa relations. The new Europe must be a global Europe. The new Europe will be larger stronger and more united. It must be a global Europe.”

Goran Svilanović emphasize that “In order to regain credibility and strengthen its transformative power, in the new geopolitical context, the EU should turn towards its neighbours in SEE and EEE and start membership negotiations with all of them. Its policy should incentivise front-runners and sanction those who misbehave or are hedging with their EU perspective.”

Closing webinar EMEA President, Prof. Rym Ayadi, highlighted that “the future of the EU-Mediterranean region and Africa is common. EU-Mediterranean and African green finance and digital deals could allow to seize the historical opportunity to further integrate.”
