EMEA Research Fellows Dr Sandra Challita, Assistant Professor of Finance at ESDES Lyon Business School & EMANES Coordinator, and Dr Doriana Cucinelli, Assistant Professor of Banking and Finance at the University of Parma, participated at the 12th International Conference of the Financial Engineering and Banking Society.

The conference was co-organized by the Financial Engineering Laboratory of the Technical University of Crete and the Department of Economics of the University of Crete and took place at Chania, Greece on 1-4 June 2023. The conference theme was “Stability and Risk in Banking and Financial Markets”.

Dr Sandra Challita presented the paper “Banks’ diversity: Indices and determinants”, co-authored with Prof Rym Ayadi, Doriana Cucinelli and Sami Ben Jabeur, at the session “European Banking” Chaired by Barbra Meller, Senior Economist at European Central Bank. The paper suggests a measure of banking diversity based on Banks Ownership and Business Models.

Dr Doriana Cucinelli presented the paper “The origin of financial instability and systemic risk: Do bank business models matter?” co-authored with Prof Rym Ayadi, Paola Bongini and Barbara Casu, at the session “Systemic risk”, chaired by Paola Bongini, Professor of Banking and Finance at the Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca. The paper underlines the importance of Business Models in determining both the exposure and the contribution to systemic risk of European listed banks.
