The President of the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association – EMEA, and Director of the Euro-Mediterranean Network for Economic Studies – EMNES, Prof. Rym Ayadi, participated at the EU – OECD – Regional Seminar on Enhancing Integrity for Sustainable Investment, which was hosted by the Union for the Mediterranean, in Barcelona, on 18-19.02.20.
Prof. Ayadi participated in the session “Building accountability and trust: the role of civil society”, along with Majdi Hassen, Executive Director, Arab Institute of Business Leaders (IACE). Moderator of the session was Mr. Carlos Conde, Head, Middle East and Africa Division, Global Relations Secretariat, OECD, and member of the Advisory Committee of the Euro-Mediterranean Network for Economic Studies – EMNES.
Prof. Ayadi highlighted that “the answer to fight corruption is transparency – by developing comprehensive initiatives to enhance transparency at all levels – Starting from government entities and from private sectors together with the enforcement of Anti Bribery Acts. A global agency to fight corruption must be put in place as part of the G20 agenda for 2020.”
The seminar provided a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue on the importance of fighting corruption and promoting integrity to attract and retain investment in the MED region. Policy makers from investment and anti-corruption bodies, private sector and civil society representatives from MED and EU economies explored how enhanced integrity could contribute to achieving sustainable FDI and facilitate the deployment of investments.
