The national dialogue workshop on the Social Protection System in Tunisia was organized by the Economic Research Forum (ERF) and took place online on 24th and 25th of January. In this event Prof. Najat El Mekkaoui Professor of Economics at Paris-Dauphine University, member of the EMEA expert panel and of the EMNES Scientific Committee and ERF research fellow, and Dr. Yeganeh Forouheshfar, EMEA researcher, presented their paper entitled “Social Security Coverage and Informal Employment in Tunisia”.
The paper has been co-authored by Najat El Mekkaoui, Yeganeh Forouheshfar, Asma Ben Hassen, Jacob Emont, and Nidhal Ben Cheikh. It provides an overview of the main features of the social security system in Tunisia, analyses the characteristics of the informal workers and the main determinants of transition towards formality and provides some propositions to extend the social protection in Tunisia.
The workshop allowed experts, civil society representatives and policy makers to exchange on the outputs of the different papers on the current state of social protection system in Tunisia and discuss the main challenges of the current social protection system, discuss the role of civil society in promoting social protection reforms based on a comparative analysis between Tunisia and Jordan, discuss the main policy recommendations and determine the main priorities in terms of reforms for a more inclusive social protection system in Tunisia.
